Eco-Drive from Citizen is a patented technology that is able to use not only sunlight but also artificial light as power source for watches. It therefore goes a step further than the conventional solar technology. Sunlight or artificial light penetrates watch glass and dial, collected in the under-dial solar cell and converted into electrical energy. This energy is stored in a rechargeable secondary battery, which ensures the smooth operation. After fully charged, depending on the watch caliber, thanks to the Eco-Drive system, even over a longer period in the dark, the functionality is impaired.
